World Patient Safety Day 2024: Improving Diagnosis

Tuesday, 17 September 2024

In 2024, World Patient Safety Day,
established by WHO, is dedicated to the theme
"Improving Diagnosis for Patient Safety."

The main goal is to draw attention to the importance of accurate and timely diagnosis,
which plays a key role in ensuring patient safety and preventing medical errors.

Diagnostic errors can include delays, incorrect, or missed diagnoses, affecting a significant number of people during their lifetime.
These errors can lead to serious health consequences.
Therefore, it is crucial to make significant efforts to improve diagnosis at all levels of healthcare,
from doctors to healthcare facility leaders.

WHO calls for joint efforts to reduce the number of diagnostic errors
through a systematic approach, the use of technology,
as well as active involvement of patients and their families in diagnostic processes.
This includes improving access to diagnostic tests, thorough history taking, and clinical examinations,
as well as learning from past mistakes.

The goals of World Patient Safety Day include
raising awareness about the issue of diagnostic errors,
strengthening collaboration between healthcare workers and patients,
and encouraging active public participation in improving the safety of diagnostic processes.
