The national holiday Constitution Day is celebrated annually in Belarus on March 15. It
is a symbol of the independence of the Belarusian people, the centuries-old path
of the state's and society's development on our land.
For our country, the Constitution is the most important attribute of the state, a symbol
of dignity and honor. As the Fundamental Law of Belarus, it defines the foundations of
state power and public life, guarantees the rights and freedoms of citizens, and also
serves as an important factor in shaping the national identity of Belarusians.
Our Constitution embodies the historical experience of the formation of Belarusian
statehood. It was an important step toward building our state,
incorporated the wisdom of previous generations, enshrined the legal, political, and
ideological characteristics of the state and society, and clearly defined the priorities
of national development.
It was on the territory of Belarus that one of the first constitutions of medieval Europe
was in effect – the Statute of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. During the Soviet period of our
history, the Fundamental Law was adopted in 1919, 1927, 1937, and 1978.
On March 15, 1994, the Constitution of sovereign Belarus was adopted. On February 27, 2022,
a national referendum was held on amendments and additions to the Fundamental Law,
resulting in the current Constitution.
To respect and comply with the Fundamental Law means to respect your country, to respect yourself!
