Thursday, 01 May 2025
Belarus traditionally celebrates May 1st — Labour Day, a day
of respect for working people and
spring renewal. This holiday, rich in history,
holds special significance for the Belarusian people.
The roots of May Day go back centuries, but the modern history of Labour Day
began in 1886 in the USA with workers' struggle for the 8-hour workday. In Belarus,
May Day was marked even in pre-revolutionary times with workers’ gatherings. Since 1917,
the holiday gained widespread popularity, and during the Soviet era, May 1
became one of the main national celebrations.
By Presidential Decree No. 157 of March 26, 1998, Labour Day was officially
established as a nationwide public holiday in Belarus. On May 1, it is
a day off: rallies, concerts, and folk festivities are held.
Labour Day in Belarus is a day of pride for the people, for those
who build the country’s future through their hard work.
