July 3 - Independence Day of the Republic of Belarus

Wednesday, 02 July 2025

July 3rd is the most important date in Belarusian history, Independence Day of the Republic of Belarus. This national holiday was established in honor of the liberation of Minsk from Nazi-German occupiers in 1944 and symbolizes victory, freedom, and the independence of the Belarusian people. According to the results of the 1996 republican referendum, this exact date was approved as Independence Day.

However, Belarus' path to full state sovereignty began earlier, at the turn of the 1990s. On July 27, 1990, the Supreme Soviet of the BSSR adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty, which proclaimed the political and economic independence of the republic. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union on August 25, 1991, this document acquired the status of a constitutional law, cementing Belarus' status as an independent state.

Later, on September 19, 1991, the country officially changed its name from the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic to the Republic of Belarus. This step became an important milestone in establishing national identity and state self-government.

Independence Day is not only a remembrance of important historical events but also an expression of respect for the values of freedom, sovereignty, and the right of people to determine their own future. Annually, the Independence Day of the Republic of Belarus unites all those who cherish the fate of their country.
