November 2 — Memorial Day (Autumn Ancestors)

Friday, 31 October 2025

Annually on November 2, Belarus observes Memorial Day, established by Presidential Decree No. 157 of March 26, 1998. Among the people, this day is called Autumn Ancestors (Vosiennyia Dziady) — a time for commemorating forefathers. Originally, Orthodox Christians celebrated it on the third week after the Feast of the Intercession, but today the holiday unites both Orthodox and Catholic traditions. At the state level, it is fixed precisely on November 2.

For Belarusians, Autumn Ancestors is a home-based, family holiday. On this day, deceased relatives are remembered — their good deeds and advice — starting from the most ancient ancestors and ending with those who passed away recently. Thus, from generation to generation, the memory of the kin, respect for roots, and gratitude to those who came before us are passed down.
