Fatherland Defenders and Armed Forces Day of the Republic of Belarus

Monday, 23 February 2026

February 23 is solemnly celebrated as Fatherland Defenders and Armed Forces Day of the Republic of Belarus - a national holiday embodying courage, patriotism, and the unbreakable connection between generations. This date unites all those who hold dear the fate of their native land, who through their labor and service have strengthened and continue to strengthen the country's defense capability.

On this day, we honor the veterans who traveled the harsh roads of the Great Patriotic War, who defended the freedom and independence of the Fatherland, the soldiers of the post-war period who strengthened the power of the state through their military labor, as well as all those who fulfilled their military duty with honor and dignity. Today, the servicemen of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus continue the glorious traditions of older generations, improve their professional skills, and reliably stand guard over the peace, security, and sovereignty of the country.

The holiday was established by Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus No. 157 of March 26, 1998. Its history dates back to February 23, 1918, when Red Guard detachments won their first victories near Pskov and Narva. Over the years, the date was known as Red Army Day, Soviet Army and Navy Day, and after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, it received its current name.

According to tradition, on this day we pay tribute and deep respect to those who bravely fought for the freedom and independence of the Fatherland, and to those who today, in peacetime, carry out the difficult and responsible service of defending the Motherland, preserving peace and tranquility on their native land.
